Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder Exhibition

This theme records the Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder exhibition 2008 which used objects to explore the concept of beauty.

beauty-Exhibition_coverThese wonderful things come from the collections of two museums;  The Museum in the Park, Stroud and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter.

This partnership brings together rarely seen objects from the local area and around the world. They have all, at some time, been considered beautiful.

Our aim is to show that ideals of beauty vary from culture to culture and that the desire for beauty is universal. The objects have much to say about people as both consumers and collectors. Many of these items can be viewed in the gallery section.

“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: it exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.”

David Hume, 1711—1776 (philosopher and economist)

beauty n. The combination of all the qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and mind.
