Research into donors whose stories were unknown, or where there were significant gaps in their history. This is also an opportunity to celebrate women as museum donors, collectors, travellers and scholars.

Nancy Stanfield (1905 - 1993)
Born in Nuneaton, Stanfield was an art and crafts teacher in Nigeria and a specialist in adire dyeing techniques.

Sheila Unwin (1923 - 2009)
A Scottish-born collector of East African beadwork and an expert in Arab chests.

William Hamilton Broun (1854 - 1937)
A Lieutenant-Colonel in the British army, whose military career led to service and travel in British East Africa.

Reverend Henry Townsend (1820 - 1885)
Working with the Church Missionary Society, Exeter-born Townsend set up mission in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Herbert Strong Burrough (1876 - 1952)
A soldier and political officer who resided at Ijebu Ode, SW Nigeria between 1903 and 1926.

Frederick Philip Pinkett (1872 - 1922)
A solicitor and colonial officer who served in Lagos, Nigeria from 1895 to 1911.

Percy Nightingale (1836 - 1895)
A colonial officer with a Sidmouth connection who served in South Africa.

James Bandinel (1783 - 1849)
Civil servant in the Foreign Office, who became Superintendent of the Slave Trade Department 1824 – 1845.
