Catherine Elliott, Nessa Leibhammer, 2017 DDF research:
A pair of handmade leather desert boots, known locally as veldskoen (veld shoes), 'picked up at Battlefield of Belfast' , this is the Battle of Bergendal during the Second Boer War 21 - 27 August 1900.
The boots are well worn and likely removed from a dead Boer. The term Boer today implies unsophisticated farmer and modern day Afrikaners do not like the use of this term. Sir Redvers Buller was involved as a commander of the battle (see the equestrian statue of Buller in Exeter).
